This flagship series brings together Parliamentarians with experts in science and engineering, showcasing outstanding Canadian research accomplishments. Its purpose is to provide unbiased insight into topical scientific issues, within a non-partisan forum. This prestigious forum represents a unique opportunity for scientists to communicate important findings to a distinguished and influential audience.

The series is organized by PAGSE, an umbrella group of 25 + science and engineering organizations operating under the auspices of the Royal Society, and is supported by NSERC.

Putting Humpty together again: rebuilding peatlands after resource extraction

with

Line Rochefort, Université Laval

Major disruption of natural landscapes is too often the unavoidable consequence of extracting economic value from Canada's natural resources. While Université Laval biologist Line Rochefort is under no illusion about the difficulty of bringing disturbed systems back to a viable natural state, she and her colleagues have helped put Canada at the top of the game in developing new strategies to manage and reclaim boreal peatlands. Techniques developed from her collaborations helped the horticultural peat industry to both significantly improve reclamation and gain greater social acceptance. Similar knowledge and techniques now aid the oil industry to meet its regulatory obligations to restore lands around decommissioned open mines near Fort McMurray as well as on former oil pads in the Peace River region.

Line Rochefort is the NSERC Industrial Chair in Peatland Management and Professor in the Department of Plant Sciences of the Université Laval and a graduate of Universite Laval, the University of Alberta and Cambridge University. A pioneering leader and multiple award-winner in the ecology of landscape restoration, Dr. Rochefort founded the Peatland Ecology Research Group in 1993 and has led numerous successful research collaborations with industry, and federal and provincial government partners.
