This flagship series brings together Parliamentarians with experts in science and engineering, showcasing outstanding Canadian research accomplishments. Its purpose is to provide unbiased insight into topical scientific issues, within a non-partisan forum. This prestigious forum represents a unique opportunity for scientists to communicate important findings to a distinguished and influential audience.

The series is organized by PAGSE, an umbrella group of 25 + science and engineering organizations operating under the auspices of the Royal Society, and is supported by NSERC.

From canoe to container ship: Managing water in the Great Lakes - St Lawrence River system

with

Christiane Hudon, Environment Canada

Reservoir to a fifth of the world’s surface freshwater and support system to some 59 million people, the Great Lakes - Saint Lawrence River Basin is central to Canada’s identity. But these are troubled waters. Average temperatures are rising, water levels falling. The public feels the pain in terms of reduced recreational opportunities, declining property values, and navigation, water supply and waste disposal issues. Less evident, but more important in the longer term, water quantity and quality changes are impacting aquatic ecosystems and the services they provide. This talk will examine the complex relationships between climate, hydrology, ecosystem functions and human activities and the rapidly multiplying list of challenges that now face decision-makers and water managers.

Dr. Christiane Hudon carries out multidisciplinary research on large river ecosystems. As a Canadian government expert, she has provided scientific advice to the International Joint Commission on alternative regulation plans for discharges into the St. Lawrence River and for Canadian regulations to lower the limit of the concentration of phosphorus in household detergents. A Senior Research Scientist with Environment Canada at the St. Lawrence Centre, in Montreal, Dr. Hudon holds a Ph.D. in Biological Oceanography from Université Laval.
