This flagship series brings together Parliamentarians with experts in science and engineering, showcasing outstanding Canadian research accomplishments. Its purpose is to provide unbiased insight into topical scientific issues, within a non-partisan forum. This prestigious forum represents a unique opportunity for scientists to communicate important findings to a distinguished and influential audience.

The series is organized by PAGSE, an umbrella group of 25 + science and engineering organizations operating under the auspices of the Royal Society, and is supported by NSERC.

Human Genomics and New Models for Drug Discovery

with

Aled Edwards, University of Toronto

The pharmaceutical sector is under stress: globally, research budgets are decreasing, and research and development sites are closing. New R&D models are required to ensure the development of drugs to treat diseases like Alzheimer’s and mental illness. The Structural Genomics Consortium, founded in 2003, works to identify proteins that are potential drug targets – one of the most important parts of drug discovery. Under their unique research model, researchers and the private sector collaborate and share results globally through an “open access” (no patents) R&D approach.

Dr. Aled Edwards oversees the Structural Genomics Consortium (SGC). Trained as a protein biochemist at McGill and Stanford Universities, his teams are responsible for approximately20% of the global output of human protein structures. As Chief Executive of the SGC, Al has overseen the growth of the organization from its inception. He is also Banbury Professor of Medical Research at the University of Toronto. Al's interests include genomics and proteomics, the economics of drug discovery, the role of intellectual property in innovation, and science outreach. He was the Scientific Advisor to the award-winning international TV science drama, ReGenesis.
