This flagship series brings together Parliamentarians with experts in science and engineering, showcasing outstanding Canadian research accomplishments. Its purpose is to provide unbiased insight into topical scientific issues, within a non-partisan forum. This prestigious forum represents a unique opportunity for scientists to communicate important findings to a distinguished and influential audience.

The series is organized by PAGSE, an umbrella group of 25 + science and engineering organizations operating under the auspices of the Royal Society, and is supported by NSERC.


Ocean Acidification: the other carbon dioxide problem

Year after year, about a quarter of the carbon dioxide emitted from human activities ends up in the oceans. When this gas dissolves in sea water, the oceans become more acidic, fundamentally changing their chemistry and compromising the skeletons of corals, shellfish and many other forms of marine life. While science has made progress in predicting the direct effects of this acidification, we are still far from being able to predict the full impacts on ecosystems. Reversing the acidification also poses a great challenge. Solutions to global warming that do not reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide will not solve the acidification problem.

Dr. John Cullen is a Professor of Oceanography (Emeritus) at Dalhousie University, formerly serving as Killam Chair in Ocean Studies, Killam Professor, and Industrial Research Chair in Environmental Observation Technology. His research specialities are marine microalgae, ocean monitoring systems, and the use of microalgae for fuels and protein. A pioneer in the development of ocean observation technologies, Cullen was selected as an inaugural Fellow of The Oceanography Society and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and, along with Dr. S.W. Chisholm of MIT, was recognized by the international Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography with the Ruth Patrick Award for his contribution of basic science to the controversy over ocean fertilization for geo-engineering.
