DESCRIPTION:Dr. Robert Wolkow: The Ruse and the Reality of Nanotechnology \nNanotechnology doesn’t exist yet\, not substantially\, not compared to what is coming. What exists today is nanoscience. It is the many\, diverse and substantial developments in nanoscience that have created the buzz about future nanotechnology. The ability to literally see\, touch and even move at will individual atoms\, the knowledge that electricity works differently when run through the tiniest wires\, and the prospect of unprecedented small consumption of power and materials during the making and using of nano-devices – those are the things creating the excitement. And the excitement is well-founded – there are many reasons to believe a nano-based technological revolution is coming. Professor Wolkow will give clear examples\, using real atom-scale images of some of the new capabilities we have in hand today\, and that we foresee having. He will explain through analogies to everyday experience that nanoscience and future nanotechnology are constrained by the same natural laws as always. A distinguished chemical physicist and nanotechnology researcher\, Dr. Wolkow leads the Molecular Scale Devices program at the National Research Council’s National Institute for Nanotechnology and is a Professor of Physics at the University of Alberta\, where he holds the\niCORE Chair of Nanoscale Information and Communications Technologies. \nDr. Robert Wolkow: La ruse et la réalité de la nanotechnologie \nLa nanotechnologie n’existe pas encore\, pas véritablement\, pas à comparer à ce qui s’en vient. Ce qui existe aujourd’hui\, c’est la nanoscience. Ce sont les nombreuses avancées\, diverses et importantes\, en nanoscience qui sont à l’origine de toute l’effervescence que suscite la future nanotechnologie. La capacité de littéralement voir\, toucher et même déplacer à son gré des atomes individuels\, savoir que l’électricité se comporte différemment lorsqu’elle parcourt les fils électriques les plus minuscules\, et la perspective d’une consommation de puissance et de matériaux plus réduite que jamais pour la fabrication et l’utilisation des nanodispositifs – voilà ce qui crée tout cet enthousiasme. Et cet enthousiasme est bien fondé – bien des choses nous portent à croire qu’une révolution technologique fondée sur la nanotechnologie est sur le point de survenir. Le professeur Wolkow donnera des exemples clairs\, en se servant de véritables images à l’échelle de l’atome\, de certaines des nouvelles capacités que nous avons aujourd’hui et de celles que nous attendons. Il expliquera\, en faisant des analogies avec l’expérience quotidienne\, que la nanoscience et la future nanotechnologie suivent les lois naturelles de toujours. Chercheur distingué en chimie physique et en nanotechnologie\, M. Wolkow dirige le programme des appareils à l’échelle moléculaire à l’Institut national de nanotechnologie du Conseil national de recherches du Canada et il est professeur de physique à l’University of Alberta où il est titulaire de la chaire de recherche iCORE en technologies de l’information et des communications à l’échelle nanométrique (iCORE Chair of Nanoscale Information and Communications Technologies).
