DESCRIPTION:Dr. Bridget Stutchbury: When the canary dies  \nMigratory songbirds are experiencing one of the most spectacular declines in numbers of all animal species. It is a sobering thought that Rachel Carson’s conservation landmark book\, Silent Spring\, fingered agricultural chemicals as a likely cause as far back as 1962. Yet in the ensuing decades\, pesticide use has continued to grow\, especially in the Third World where toxic chemicals are used that would no longer be allowed in developed countries. Professor Stutchbury will present the latest scientific evidence for the many challenges that humans now present to songbirds and their ecosystems\, and specifically for how chemicals and global food policies have become major drivers of songbird declines. Implicit in her message and the science is a blunt warning that the birds are not the only ones at risk. An internationally recognized expert on migratory songbirds\, Dr. Stutchbury holds the Canada Research Chair in Ecology and Conservation Biology at York University. Dr. Stutchbury has followed songbirds to their wintering grounds in Latin America and back to the breeding grounds in North America to understand their behaviour\, ecology and conservation. She is author of the book Silence of the Songbirds\, which was a finalist for the 2007 Governor General’s Literary Award for non-fiction. \nDr. Bridget Stutchbury: Lorsque les oiseaux se taisent à jamais \nDe toutes les espèces animales\, l’oiseau chanteur migrateur est l’une de celles dont le nombre d’individus diminue de façon la plus spectaculaire. Pourtant\, au cours des décennies suivantes\, l’utilisation des pesticides a continué de croître\, particulièrement dans les pays en voie de développement où les produits chimiques toxiques interdits dans les pays développés sont encore en usage. Bridget Stutchbury présentera les plus récentes preuves scientifiques démontrant que l’homme est la source de nombreux défis pour les oiseaux chanteurs et leurs écosystèmes\, et notamment en quoi les produits chimiques et les politiques alimentaires mondiales contribuent grandement au déclin des populations d’oiseaux chanteurs. Message implicite de la chercheuse\, avertissement sérieux lancé par la science : les oiseaux ne sont pas les seuls menacés. Experte reconnue à l’échelle internationale en ce qui concerne les oiseaux chanteurs migrateurs\, Bridget Stutchbury est titulaire de la Chaire de recherche du Canada en écologie et biologie de conservation\, à l’Université York. Mme Stutchbury a suivi les oiseaux chanteurs depuis leurs aires d’hivernage en Amérique latine à leurs aires de reproduction en Amérique du Nord afin de mieux comprendre leur comportement ainsi que leur écologie et leur conservation. Elle est l’auteure de Silence of the Songbirds: How We Are Losing the World’s Songbirds and What We Can Do to Save Them\, ouvrage pour lequel elle a été finaliste des Prix littéraires du Gouverneur général de 2007\, dans la catégorie études et essais.
