DESCRIPTION:Dr. Daniel Krewski: Decision-making in an uncertain world  \nAre cell phones safe? Are there valid replacements for animals in toxicology tests? What are the health threats from emerging diseases? Questions about safety and reliability pervade today’s complex technology-driven world. Yet definitive answers rarely come quickly or easily. This talk will explore some of the fundamental misconceptions about risk and how\, in the absence of certainty\, advances in the increasingly rigorous field of risk management science can offer valuable assistance to the public and decision makers. Internationally renowned for his research on environmental determinants of health\, Daniel Krewski is the Scientific Director of the McLaughlin Centre for Population Health Risk Assessment at the University of Ottawa and the NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Risk Science. Since 2008\, he has also served as the Associate Scientific Director for PrioNet Canada—a Network of Centres of Excellence\, involving 15 Canadian universities\, investigating the health risks of prion diseases such as Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy and variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease. Dr. Krewski is also the President and Chief Executive Officer of Risk Sciences International\, and an adjunct research professor of statistics in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Carleton University. He has published more than 600 articles in scientific and technical reviews\, and authored or directed the publication of six books to date.
