DESCRIPTION:Dr. Thorleifson is a scientist with Natural Resources Canada who\, over the past 12 years\, has made major contributions to the science that supports diamond exploration. He was recently named a 1998/99 Distinguished Lecturer of the Canadian Institute of Mining\, Metallurgy and\nPetroleum. Dr. Thorleifson will explain how diamonds were discovered in Canada. This is a remarkable success story that will culminate with the opening of Canada’s first diamond mine later this year\, a development in the NWT that will create nearly a thousand jobs and generate anticipated revenue of a half-billion dollars a year. A second mine in the NWT has been proposed\, additional NWT developments are possible\, and exploration is very active in Alberta\, as well as in several areas in Saskatchewan\, Manitoba\, Ontario and Quebec. \n\n\n\n\n  \nÀ l’emploi de Ressources naturelles Canada\, Dr Harvey Thorleifson est un scientifique qui\, depuis 12 ans\, a apporté une contribution majeure aux programmes de recherche qui appuient la prospection du diamant. Il relatera une série d’exploits et de succès remarquables qui trouvera son aboutissement dans l’ouverture\, plus tard cette année\, de la première mine de diamants au Canada; située dans les Territoires du Nord-Ouest\, cette mine créera près d’un millier d’emplois et générera des recettes estimées à un demi-milliard de dollars par année.
