DESCRIPTION:Dr. Daniel Pauly: Fisheries and global warming\, and their impacts on marine ecosystems and global food security \nOver the last half century\, the reach of industrial fisheries extended down into deeper waters and spread out across the oceans\, past the developing nations of the Southern Hemisphere\, all the way to Antarctica. Almost everywhere\, massive catch increases were followed by equally spectacular collapses. That era of expansion is now over. Global catch\, which peaked in the late 1980s\, remains in decline\, while evidence for collateral damage to ecosystems and biodiversity mounts. Dr. Pauly will explore options to repair some of this damage and prepare the world for a future in which global seafood supply faces its latest threat—global warming. Dr. Daniel Pauly is a world leader in drawing international attention to the state of the oceans and for advocating science-based stewardship. A professor in the Fisheries Centre\, which he directed from 2003 to 2008\, he is an authority in ecosystem modeling and the management of fisheries. His scientific contributions include more than 500 articles and book chapters. His work has been recognized by major awards such as the Excellence in Ecology Prize\, Germany (2007)\, the Volvo Environmental Prize\, Stockholm (2006)\, the International Cosmos Prize from the Expo ’90 Foundation of Japan (2005) and the Award of Excellence of the American Fisheries Society (2004).
