As near daily headlines warn us, the rise of drug resistant microbes, or \u201csuperbugs\u201d, \u2013 is impacting public health. We need antibiotics not only to treat infections, but to control them. Antibiotics are likewise the basis of modern-day medical miracles, from organ transplants and joint replacement, to chemotherapy or preterm infant care. Paradoxically, as bacteria become ever more resistant, drug development in antibiotics is stalled: the number of new antibiotics approved for use dropped from 17 between 1980-1984 to 2 between 2005-2007. Discovery research across Canada is helping to bridge this gap through new knowledge about how resistance emerges, its origins and evolution as multidisciplinary teams of scientists, clinicians and engineers work together to solve the antibiotics crisis. Dr. Gerry Wright is an expert in antibiotic resistance. He is the Canada Research Chair in Canada Research Chair in Antibiotic Biochemistry and Director of the Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Infectious Disease Research at McMaster University.<\/p>\n

R\u00e9guli\u00e8rement, les m\u00e9dias nous informent de la recrudescence de bact\u00e9ries r\u00e9sistantes aux antibiotiques, aussi appel\u00e9es superbact\u00e9ries; ceci repr\u00e9sente une menace pour la sant\u00e9 publique. Les antibiotiques sont n\u00e9cessaires non seulement pour traiter les infections, mais aussi pour les contr\u00f4ler. Ces antibiotiques permettent \u00e9galement le succ\u00e8s des greffes d\u2019organes, des remplacements articulaires ainsi que des chimioth\u00e9rapies ou des soins aux pr\u00e9matur\u00e9s. Bien que le nombre de souches bact\u00e9riennes r\u00e9sistantes aux antibiotiques disponibles s\u2019accroisse, le d\u00e9veloppement de nouvelles mol\u00e9cules antibiotique stagne. En effet, de 17 nouvelles mol\u00e9cules d\u00e9couvertes entre 1980 et 1984, ce nombre est pass\u00e9 \u00e0 2 entre 2005 et 2007. Heureusement, les travaux de recherche canadiens contribuent \u00e0 combler ce foss\u00e9. Des \u00e9quipes multidisciplinaires combinant chercheur(e)s universitaires, clinicien(e)s et ing\u00e9nieur(e)s s\u2019emploient \u00e0 trouver des solutions pour lutter contre l\u2019antibior\u00e9sistance en g\u00e9n\u00e9rant de nouvelles connaissances sur ses m\u00e9canismes, ses origines et son \u00e9volution. Gerry Wright est un expert de l\u2019antibior\u00e9sistance. Il est titulaire de Chaire de recherche du Canada en biochimie des antibiotiques et directeur du Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Infectious Disease Research de la McMaster University.<\/p>\n
