The Green Chemistry approach—design the process so pollutants aren’t made—can reduce environmental impact while making industries more economically competitive. Economic benefits occur because designing processes to reduce pollution requires minimizing wasted energy and materials. What’s the catch? The right chemistry and societal conditions are necessary to bring these green processes to market. This presentation will discuss the origins of green chemistry, as well as how new technology is assessed for
“greenness” and the factors that slow the adoption of innovations. Philip Jessop will introduce, as an example of a new technology, one of his switchable solvents. Dr. Jessop is the Canada Research Chair in Green Chemistry at Queen’s University and the Technical Director of GreenCentre Canada. He studies green solvents, carbon dioxide and hydrogen. Distinctions include the Canadian Catalysis Lectureship Award (2004), a Canada Research Chair (2003 to present), the NSERC John C. Polanyi Award (2008), a Killam Research Fellowship (2010-12) and the Queen’s University Award for Excellence in Research (2010). Dr. Jessop chaired the 2007 CHEMRAWN/ICCDU Conference on Greenhouse Gases and the 2010 3rd International IUPAC Conference on Green Chemistry, as well as serving on the Government of Ontario’s Toxics Reduction Scientific Expert Panel.
