However, X-ray space telescopes reveal a radically different Universe \u2013 one of enormous thermonuclear explosions, jets spewing from super massive black holes, and giant gamma-ray bursts. These dramatic, violent phenomena in the sky are a testament to Nature&rsquo;s ability to harness huge sources of energy in ways that cannot currently be replicated in Terrestrial laboratories. Dr. Kaspi will describe several of these types of events, their origin, frequency, and what they can tell us about physical extremes currently mysterious to science. Dr. Kaspi is a world leader in the study of neutron stars \u2013 ultradense, rapidly rotating stars that are close cousins of black holes. She holds the Lorne Trottier Chair in Astrophysics and Cosmology, and a Canada Research Chair in Observational Astrophysics in McGill University\u2019s Department of Physics. Her many awards and honours include the Royal Society of Canada Rutherford Memorial Medal for Physics, the Herzberg Medal of the Canadian Association of Physicists, an NSERC Steacie Fellowship, the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research Young Explorer Prize and an Alfred P. Ces ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes intenses et violents qui se produisent dans le ciel t\u00e9moignent de la capacit\u00e9 de la nature \u00e0 se servir d\u2019immenses sources d\u2019\u00e9nergie de fa\u00e7ons qui ne peuvent pas \u00eatre reproduites dans les laboratoires terrestres d\u2019aujourd\u2019hui. Victoria Kaspi d\u00e9crira plusieurs de ces types d\u2019\u00e9v\u00e9nements, leur origine, leur fr\u00e9quence et ce qu\u2019ils peuvent nous r\u00e9v\u00e9ler au sujet des ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes extr\u00eames qui restent un myst\u00e8re pour la science \u00e0 l\u2019heure actuelle. Elle est titulaire de la Chaire Lorne Trottier en astrophysique et en cosmologie et de la Chaire de recherche du Canada en astrophysique d\u2019observation, au D\u00e9partement de physique de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 McGill.
