DESCRIPTION:Jean Caron\, Université Laval \nThursday May 12\, 2016 \nAgriculture today faces increasing challenges ranging from extreme weather and soil and water depletion to the relentless conversion of food land to other uses. Professor Jean Caron of Université Laval is a leader in soil science and precision agriculture technologies. From his own research\, he will present examples of how real time soil sensing technologies and big data science can be used to improve crop productivity and water use. He will discuss potential routes for adopting these new technologies as well as the opportunities they will bring to Canadian farmers. A professor of soil physics and hydrodynamics\, Dr. Caron holds an NSERC Industrial Research Chair at Laval and leads a team of researchers that brings together strawberry and cranberry producers with technology partners. He has won numerous major awards\, including the Prix Joseph-Armand-Bombardier and the NSERC Synergy Prize for Innovation. He is also a co- founder of Hortau Inc. and Hortau Corp.\, two rapidly-growing North American leaders in precision irrigation technology\, with about 60 employees at locations in Canada and California. \n  \n\n\n\n\nJean Caron\, Université Laval \nJeudi\, le 12 mai 2016 \nAujourd’hui\, le milieu de l’agriculture est confronté à des défis grandissants\, notamment les températures extrêmes\, l’épuisement des sols\, la diminution des ressources en eau et l’utilisation incessante des terres agricoles à d’autres fins. Le professeur Jean Caron de l’Université Laval est un chef de file des sciences du sol et des technologies d’agriculture de précision. Il présentera des exemples tirés de ses travaux pour montrer comment utiliser les technologies d’analyse du sol en temps réel et la science des mégadonnées en vue d’améliorer la productivité des cultures et l’utilisation de l’eau. Il parlera des moyens à prendre pour adopter ces nouvelles technologies et des possibilités que celles ci apporteront aux agriculteurs du Canada. M. Caron est professeur de physique du sol et d’hydrodynamique et titulaire  d’unechaire de recherche industrielle du CRSNG à l’Université Laval. Il dirige une équipe de chercheurs qui réunit des producteurs de fraises et de canneberges et des partenaires technologiques. Il a reçu de nombreux prix importants\, notamment le Prix Joseph Armand Bombardier et le Prix Synergie pour l’innovation du CRSNG. En outre\, il est cofondateur des entreprises Hortau Inc. et Hortau Corp.\, deux chefs de file nord américains de la technologie d’irrigation de précision qui connaissent une croissance rapide et qui comptent environ 60 employés au Canada et en Californie.
