DESCRIPTION:Better Pandemic Preparedness – How Canadian science can be ready for future threats \nClick here to view the presentation. \nDr. Volker Gerdts\, University of Saskatchewan  \nThe COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for better preparedness to infectious diseases\, not only in Canada but around the world. Rapid responses are critical and require national centres that have the ability and resources available to immediately respond to new disease threats. The Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO) at the University of Saskatchewan currently operates Canada’s largest high-containment facility and was one of the first organizations in the country to isolate the new coronavirus\, develop an animal model for testing\, and have a vaccine candidate in clinical trials in humans. This presentation will provide an overview of some of the lessons learned from the current pandemic and provide possible solutions of how Canada can be better prepared for emerging diseases. \nDr. Volker Gerdts is the Director and CEO of the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization-International Vaccine Centre (VIDO-InterVac)\, located at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon\, Canada. He previously served as Associate Director of Research of VIDO-InterVac from 2007 until 2018. Dr. Gerdts is also a Professor for Veterinary Immunology in the Department of Veterinary Microbiology at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan. He received a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1994 from Hanover Veterinary School and a German PhD equivalent from the Federal Research Institute for Animal Health\, Island of Riems and Hanover Veterinary School\, Germany in 1997. He has served on various editorial boards and national and international scientific review panels including the National Institutes of Health\, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations\, and the Gairdner Foundation. \nMieux se préparer aux pandémies — Comment la science peut aider le Canada à se préparer à faire face aux menaces futures \nCliquez ici pour voir la présentation. \nDr. Volker Gerdts\, l’Université de la Saskatchewan  \nLa pandémie de COVID-19 a fait ressortir la nécessité d’une meilleure préparation pour lutter contre les maladies infectieuses\, non seulement au Canada mais dans le monde entier. Des interventions rapides sont essentielles et pour intervenir rapidement\, il faut avoir accès à des centres nationaux qui disposent des capacités et des ressources nécessaires pour répondre immédiatement aux nouvelles menaces de maladies. La Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO) à l’University de la Saskatchewan exploite actuellement la plus grande installation à haut niveau de confinement du Canada; elle a été l’une des premières organisations au pays à isoler le nouveau coronavirus\, à mettre au point un modèle animal pour les essais et à avoir un vaccin expérimental faisant l’objet d’essais cliniques chez les humains. De 2007 à 2018\, il a rempli les fonctions de directeur associé de la recherche au VIDO-InterVac. Dr. Gerdts est également professeur d’immunologie vétérinaire au département de microbiologie vétérinaire du Western College of Veterinary Medicine à l’Université de la Saskatchewan. Il a obtenu un doctorat en médecine vétérinaire en 1994 à l’école vétérinaire de Hanovre et un équivalent allemand du doctorat à l’institut fédéral allemand de recherche en santé animale\, sur l’ile de Riems\, et à l’école vétérinaire de Hanovre (Allemagne) en 1997.
