DESCRIPTION:Scott Knight\, Royal Military College of Canada \nThursday\, March 10\, 2016 \nAlthough cyber security regularly makes news headlines\, the resulting discussions often fail to make crucial distinctions between cyber-crime\, cyber-espionage and cyber-attack. This presentation will focus on the technology and methods used in cyber-attacks. Although these attacks happen in the virtual setting of computer networks\, the consequences may be felt in physical settings\, such as industrial facilities. Cyber-attacks can also disrupt our approach to national defence\, since the targets could be commercial or public systems such as power grids\, which are not directly under military or government control. Protecting ourselves from such threats will call for a new strategy\, one that places well informed and well trained people at the forefront of safeguarding our economy and society. Dr. Scott Knight is Professor and Head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Royal Military College. He joined the faculty in 2000 after 21 years in the Canadian Air Force\, where he started as a pilot and then moved into work on computer systems and network engineering. Dr. Knight founded the RMC Computer Security Laboratory\, which focuses on computer network defence and support to information operations. \n  \n\n\n\n\nScott Knight\, Collège militaire royal du Canada \nJeudi\, le 10 mars 2016 \nBien que la cybersécurité fasse régulièrement la une\, les distinctions cruciales entre le cybercrime\, le cyberespionnage et les cyberattaques ne sont pas souvent faites dans les discussions qui s’ensuivent. La présentation portera sur la technologie et les méthodes utilisées pour les cyberattaques. Ces attaques ont lieu dans l’environnement virtuel des réseaux informatiques\, mais les conséquences peuvent se faire sentir dans des environnements matériels comme des installations industrielles. En outre\, les cyberattaques peuvent perturber notre stratégie de défense nationale\, puisque les cibles peuvent être des systèmes commerciaux ou publics comme des réseaux d’électricité\, qui ne sont pas directement gérés par l’armée ou le gouvernement. Pour contrer ces menaces\, il faudra élaborer une nouvelle stratégie où les principaux responsables de la protection de notre économie et de notre société seront des personnes bien informées et bien formées. Scott Knight est directeur du Département de génie électrique et informatique du Collège militaire royal du Canada (CMRC)\, où il est également professeur. Il s’est joint au département en 2000\, après avoir passé 21 ans dans l’Aviation canadienne où\, après avoir été pilote\, il a réalisé des travaux liés aux systèmes informatiques et au génie des réseaux. M. Knight a fondé le laboratoire de sécurité informatique du CMRC\, qui se concentre sur la protection des réseaux informatiques et le soutien des opérations d’information.
